Are there real USB or PCMCIA modems available

    My new laptop has a winmodem and it's looking pretty hopeless about
    getting it to work. It also lacks a serial port so I can't use an old
    fashion external modem. Are there any real modems available on eitehr
    PCMCIA cards or as USB modems. I get the impression that most USB modems
    are also winmodems, are there any that are real modems?

I'd echo the same thing everyone else does, but would add one piece of information I haven't seen yet: The reason a Winmodem is unlikely to work is because all of the logic to make it work isn't in the hardware; part of it is in the Windows drivers that are created for the device, and Windows is the only platform they tend to be created for. ...
