Because you still need to talk to the hardware.

Yes. The controller presents one huge disk to the OS instead of many
smaller ones. All the raid functions are performed by the controller.
>From the OS' viewpoint, there is just one huge SCSI disk.
The controller shows up as a SCSI controller.
