Not necessarily. Raid controllers can have functionality beyond normal
drives - hot swapping, error diagnostics, etc. So the driver has to be
able to handle all those things, so you can
a) be told a drive failed
b) replace failed drive
c) tell controller to rebuild on now-replaced drive
When you do this, the function of the drives may change - a standby drive
is now an active drive, and the drive you put in is now standby....
So the driver has to handle all of these things and interface with you in
user space somehow.
(I don't know if this pertains to 3Ware controllers, since I don't use
them, but it's my experience with other RAID controllers.)
