The Radeon 9200 is probably the best card for him. There are opensource
DRI drivers up to and including the 9200 card. For higher numbers
like 9600 and 9800 ATI has only given binary drivers.

At the bottom of that page there is a list of supported cards.
All nvidia cards only have binary drivers with hardware OpenGL support.
There are also some cards from Matrox with opensource drivers, but those
have less performance.
