USB device support is all done in the kernel, so upgrade your kernel to
the latest version available. There may be a prebuilt RPM for a 2.4.24
or so kernel for the ancient Redhat 8. Try that first.

If that doesn't work, read the Kernel-Compilation HOWTO, download the
2.4.26 source tarball from kernel.org, untar it, "make menuconfig", set
all the options appropriately following the directions in the HOWTO,
"make bzImage modules modules_install", add the new kernel to your GRUB
or LILO configuration, rerun LILO if necessary, reboot. I always build
my own kernels from official source because I don't trust Redhat or
indeed any distro manufacturer to get it right. YMMV. HTH,
