I've installed computers on ships that run off the 24V DC system -
it's fully battery backed and runs all the emergency systems. There
are loads of suppliers of DC input ATX power supplies - e.g.
PS-250/D24 from http://www.impulse-corp.co.uk or IPS-B2U-6150F from
http://www.steatite.co.uk/psus.html . http://www.marinecomputing.com
has a range of solutions. It's worth talking to sales@hamiltone.co.uk
Biggest snag is that the 24V supply on ships is not earthed - it
floats, so that an earth fault can be survived. There are alarms and
detectors for earth faults. So the supplies have to be galvanically
isolated - it's no good if the 0V from the motherboard - which is
earthed - is connectd through to the DC input. I think all of the
ones I describe are isolated. For the LCD screens, however, I had to
buy big DC-DC converters from Lambda or Farnell.
http://www.boser.co.uk do the BPW-830C PS/2 300W 24V DC ATX Power
Supply, but as far as I know it is not galvanically isolated.
Similarly the ACE R20 Series redundant psus from
http://www.wordsworth.co.uk. There is ace one with battery backup, in
a height suitable for a server.
At one time APC sold 240V input AT power supplies with a small lead
acid battery good for about 10 minutes - never seen one since the
introduction of ATX.
