Apparently you've never tried it with a SCSI device:

hdparm -d1 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
  setting using_dma to 1 (on)
  HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Invalid argument

However, as I said elsewhere in this thread, it isn't necessary for a
SCSI disk. (Basically, SCSI does DMA only. There is no other mode of
operation, AIUI.)
