The only time I could imagine there being a performance advantage to the
PCI card is if it were newer and faster than the IDE on the motherboard.
For example, if the motherboard supported only Ultra-66 mode while the
card (and disk) supported Ultra-133 mode, then I would think the PCI
card might offer some advantage. However, as long as the motherboard
supports the highest speed the disk can offer, I don't see how a PCI
card could offer any advantage.
One thing to be ware of though, is that some add-in PCI cards don't
support the full ATAPI protocol; they are for hard disks *only*. Check
into that before you buy if you really feel the DVD must be attached to
the add-in card.
