epson scanner

I've recently replaced by Epson 1640SU (USB connected) with an Epson 2400
Photo (the reason is that a transparency unit for the 1640 would cost
$100, and I got the 2400 for $75). After switching, I find that sane
doesn't want to work anymore. I've done sane-find-scanner, etc. but when
xsane is started by root or a user it core dumps. The iscan utility from
Epson handles things just fine. This is on a Mandrake 9.0 system.

Can anyone explain to me how to go about fixing things? Maybe reinstall
sane?

thanks
