I am using a Sparkle Gforce4 Ti4200 at 1600x1200@75Hz; the picture is
not as sharp as I might like, but acceptable; no shadows, etc.

I have not tried the analog output of an ATI card at that resolution;
the DVI-D output of an ATI Radeon 7000 is definitely fine (and if you
are not going for 3D performance, why spend more?), with the Xfree 4.3
radeon driver.

With the XFree 4.3 drivers, I could not get a proper picture from a
G450 beyond 800x600 or so. With the proprietary Matrox driver, I got
a picture, on DVI-D only up to 1280x1024; a look in the manual showed
that that's the maximum supported for DVI-D. With a special mode, I
finally got DVI-D to work at 1600x1200@52Hz (see
http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/igel2.html for details).
