OK.. I never noticed that.. I just use the cheapo Rayming TN-200 ($92)
It's based on the SiRF Star chip set which is pretty common. It outputs
NMEA 0183 data which is understood by just about all generic GPS software.

I've used mine for a year.. I've travelled from North the Canadian border
to the Mexican border and from the Mississippi to the Pacific and always
knew exactly where I was :)

The only bad thing is that the internal memory only lasts a few days
after the unit has been unplugged. When the memory goes, you have
to use the supplied software to put the unit in command mode and
change the setting.

The TN-200 outputs NMEA 0183 data which is understood by just about all generic
GPS software.
