I basically have the same drive (on Via KT333 chipset, 2.6.8.1 kernel):

hackbox:/home/tmccoy# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing cached reads: 1172 MB in 2.00 seconds = 585.21 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 144 MB in 3.01 seconds = 47.80 MB/sec
