weird MAC address change on the fly?

Not really that important but earlier on after posting a message here
and then doing a bit of other stuff on the interwebnet I suddenly lost
my connection to the lan on this machine, my netmon in gkrellm showed
no packets going out and a couple of other apps ( kweather, xntp )
reported no connection to the net.

I could not ping anywhere but could see on one of my other machines that
there was network traffic going out from this one??????

Took the nic down and brought it up again still the same result, so I
went to Yast and deleted the nic and re-installed, the same.

Stopped the SuSE Firewall and all was returned back to normal, started
the firewall and everything stopped, had a look at the eth0 interface
in the firewall and noticed that the ID string ( mac ) was not the same
as it should be and in the drop down box there was the proper one,
swapped the setting and all is back to normal again.

How the devil can Suse change the MAC on my nic while it is in use,
no-one else was on any of the machines here except for me and I was
using this machine on the net at the time it happened, had not updated
anything before during or after.

This is an onboard Nvidia nic ( forcedeth ) that has been in use for 12
months`ish with no probs at all, there has never been another nic in
here to get another MAC from.

The only other thing that I did during this was to start my TV card to
watch the news, this also had lost its settings and video was missing.

I can rule out power as I am on an UPS, I had not changed a thing and
all was working perfect until the nic went.

Could it be down to the kernel which is a 2.6.8? even though I have been
using it 24/7 for nearly 2 weeks with no adverse effects?

Any thoughts.

Have googled but not quite sure what criteria to enter.

TIA

Ps. Ya gotta admit, when I ask a question it is not the run of the mill
stuff :)
