One advantage of software raid is that you can do it on partition
level. I have several set-ups with the System on RAID-1
and the data on RAID5 and a small, unraided boot-partition.

Another advantage is that you are not bound to a specific
hardware, which allways is a problem when using hardware-RAID.
If the controller fails, you can access your data usually only
with the same card or if you are lucky another card from
the same vendor.

product, stay away) software RAID also has comparable speed
to hardware RAID for IDE and SATA.

The one thing you do not get with software-RAID is hotplugging.
Personally I think for cheaper systems that is the only reason
that could justify hardware-RAID.

And a note to an ealier posting: IDE drives do not run hot
if you mount them like the vendor recommends, i.e. with
sufficient individual airflow. Anything else is begging for
trouble.
