After some struggles I finally got a Palm Zire running as a remote
login terminal (using USB cable) under Knoppix.
This is what I did:
1. Downloaded this Linux distribution
http://campus.azintl.edu/~micros/knoppix-kids-v2.iso
to my windows machine and burned a Knoppix CD.
2. Downloaded this Palm terminal emulator program
http://www.markspace.com/online.html (eval version) and
Hot-Sync-downloaded it to the Palm Zire. Set it up so the baud
rate=9600, port=USB, handshake=none, terminal=VT100.
2. Reset PC, change BIOS so that "Boot Device" is CDROM.
3. Rebooted with Knoppix CD in drive - Knoppix booted & autodetected
everything.
4. Plugged Palm Zire USB Cable in. Start a Konsole (terminal) session
under Knoppix. On the Palm, tap the "ON" block to enable USB-based
serial port.
5. In Knoppix, click Applications->Tools->USBview to confirm the "Palm
Handheld" USB serial port.
5a. Also, if you type dmesg in the terminal you will see something
like "Palm now attached to ttyUSB0"
6. Open a terminal screen, type su (superuser)
6. next type chmod 666 ttyUSB0 (this is palm USB serial port)
7. now type passwd myname mypasswd (to set up user & pwd)
8. now type getty 9600 ttyUSB0
9. on the Palm screen, you get a login prompt! Woo hoo!
10. log in from the Palm using username/passwd you previously set up.
Hope it helps someone have some fun or save some time!
