Dunno his mobo but it sounds pretty much like some cheapo crappy
M$ only fake raid controller.

Yep, 3ware makes pretty good/fast SATA raid controllers, which
are 100% supported by Linux. Sure there are cheaper ones, but
Linux loves quality hw.;)
