d865perl + cdrom != DMA for some reason?! Any tips?

I'm not using any SATA drives, or a complex setup or anything... Just two
hard drives on the primary channel, and a cdrom on secondary master.
Kernel output is:
hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x30
ide: failed opcode was 100
end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 64
isofs_fill_suphard drivessfailed, dev=hdc, iso_blknum=16, block=16
The only suspicious dmesg output is:
PCI: Ignoring BAR0-3 of IDE controller 0000:00:1f.1
I've spend the last two weeks researching, and trying out every potentially
relevant trick I found; yet still, no luck. I've tried two different cdrom
drives, and everything works fine under windows, so the problem is probably
not hardware-related.
Everything I have read relates to the use of SATA on this board. I don't
know if anyone actually runs a pure PATA setup... the ata_piix driver
doesn't find my PATA drives, though dev_piix does. Is there some way to
force ata_piix to bind to the drives? Is this the key to making things
work? The oddest thing, is that both PATA hard-drives are working
flawlessly in full UDMA 5 mode.
Is this the proper forum for this discussion?
