I am looking for a replacement for a venerable system whose time to go
to the Frozen-Bubble farm has come, and I found an excellent price on
the Gateway 420GR system. It is based on one of the latest Intel
chipsets (not sure which, but it has a full P4 in it). I tossed
Knoppix 3.7 (kernel 2.6.9) in it at the store, and while all the
essentials loaded fine, it would only load X in VESA mode and would not
recognize the "Intel High Definition Audio" system at all. Intel is
trumpeting on their Web site that the new chipsets have Linux support
from the "top distributions", but what is the actual status on drivers
for accelerated graphics (hopefully DRI, but not critical) and sound?
