USB or Firewire storage: What add-on card?

I've been playing with one of those 1T Lacie disks. Unfortunately, I've
been seeing terrible (below 1MB/s) performance. I believe that I'm
connecting it to an older USB port (ie. USB1).

I'd like to add either USB2 or Firewire to this computer, which can run
either Fedora Core 2 or 3 or Redhat Enterprise 3.

Any recommendations for cards that work well in either protocol family?

Thanks...
