Today I bought a Sapphire Radeon 9250, hoping to enjoy 3D with free
drivers. I installed it into a test system, an Athlon XP 1900+ box
with 256MB RAM and Fedora Core 1 (Xfree 4.3).
Here's what I got:
glxgears:
Driver fps
fglrx (proprietary): 1572 fps
radeon Xfree86-4.3: 1448 fps
radeon X.org-6.8.1: 1526 fps
ut2004:
fglrx: graphics errors during Nvidia commercial, waits while or after
loading level
radeon Xfree86-4.3: graphics errors during Nvidia commercial and
during play, hanged the machine after a minute of playing or so.
radeon X.org-6.8.1: graphics ok, but slow framerates (10fps) in some
places, even at 800x600 with low-normal settings.
tuxracer:
radeon Xfree86-4.3: graphics ok, but unplayably slow (1-2fps).
There were various problems, mostly having to do with having used the
proprietary Nvidia and ATI drivers before (the ATI fglrx driver makes
a reboot necessary before the radeon driver will work properly; the
Nvidia driver needs to be uninstalled before the glx (and probably
other) module(s) work properly with the ATI drivers and cards.
