wiring switch to serial port? Ideas.

    I am interested in wiring a switch to a serial port and having an
    application running under linux monitor the status (open/closed) of the
    switch periodically.

    Does anyone have any experiences doing something like this? Any pointers
    or suggestions welcome. Especially regarding the wiring of the switch.
