Software raid with external enclosure?

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance, but is it possible to use an external array of
disks (e.g., Adaptec FS4100) as JBOD and use software raid running on
the host machine? If so, can anyone speak to the bandwidth limitations
of this setup, as compared to having the disks enclosed internally?

Many thanks,
Annie
