Need advice on choosing external HD

Hi folks,

I'm running a (slightly outdated) Slackware 10 laptop w/ USB2.0 and
Firewire. I've gotten both interfaces to work for video ... so I'm
assuming I'll be able to do the same for HDs. But just the same I
thought I'd check the newsgroups for any input / pitfalls /
suggestions. Are all HDs created equal in the eyes of the Linux kernel?
