So you loaded the module. If the module at that time found the hardware it
would probably print some message which could be seen with "dmesg".

The above append is a message to the kernel, assuming that the kernel has
the driver built in and not loaded as a module. You are now also using
another driver (ncr* instead of sym*). I'm not familiar with your card and
don't know which driver is the best.

Most likely your kernel does not have built in support for the ncr driver.
After your reboot the sym driver loaded with modprobe will be lost and
will have to be loaded with modprobe or in some other way to be usable

Your kernel probably don't have support compiled in for the card. There is
no reason to recompile your kernel, instead you should use a module which
your distribution probably already has precompiled. Depending on your
distribution the module might be loaded automatically with hotplug or you
might have to add it manually in some way by adding a modprobe line to
some startup script.
