Mines a laptop, and a couple years old as well. Either I have the worst
luck with usb-storage devices, or it aint fixed. Even after roughly three
years. Since you're compiling from source, check out:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/VIA-chipset
If kde is respawning then your window manager (KDE) might be doing the
restarting. Or you're running something like rosegarden4 that starts it
when it doesn't find anything else suitable to use. Most likely KDE, you
can tell it to use alsa in that kcontrol thing. Do that first, then kill
artsd. Or just use another wm. Gnome defaults to esd, so you might try
icewm or fluxbox instead. If you care about resources and sound quality,
you probably shouldn't be running KDE to start with as it's quite the hog.
2.6.x series of kernels don't like my system too well. I find 2.4.x
series much more stable and useable when it comes to acpi and usb. You
might also try other parms in addition to pci=noacpi.
acpi=on apm=off pci=noacpi
Also on single cpu systems, you might disable SMP, and enable local APIC.
My lucent winmodem seems to favor that configuration.
