It's the chipset that really determines compatibility. I prefer Via or
nvidia for amd cpus; intel chipsets for intel cpus. Avoid sis for onboard
video, they don't want to support linux and would rather lose it than
release the specs for their chips.
For motherboard makers, the ones I like are asus, gigabyte, msi and intel.
Find a board that has the features you want, and do a google search for
board model and 'linux', or the chipset id and 'linux' to get an idea if
people are having problems with it.
