For the writer (I have one, the internal laptop version);
$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01-dvd (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg
Schilling
Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support
Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original.
Note: Please send bug reports or support requests to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla
Note: The author of cdrecord should not be bothered with problems in
this version.
scsidev: 'ATA'
devname: 'ATA'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Linux sg driver version: 3.5.27
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.
cdrecord: Warning: using inofficial libscg transport code version

scsibus1:

CD-ROM
Mine does have updated firmware (DVD region lock fix).
And the for USB enclousure (the NewEgg link) states so, in addition the
manufactures web site states the same;
http://www.mapower.com/Images_U/84200445255PMkc51s_datasheet.pdf
I have attached other USB CD/DVD writers as well to my laptop without
any problems also. You should be able to access the USB writer
(whichever one you end up getting) as /dev/scdX, an example;
cdrecord dev=/dev/scd0 blank=fast
