Some aditional info would help helping you.
What is the cd-rom interface, SCSI or IDE?
Does the system hangs on boot (possibly with some error message) or
just doesn't boot from the cd at all?
Have you tried booting any other machines with your linux cds? Did you
suceed?
Are there any changes in the device boot order in the bios? (Probably
not as you say you can boot from the w2k cd.)
I don't know about dell or gateway, but along the way i've encoutered
some compaq systems that would refuse to boot from non-dos like
filesystems. In that specifical situation they had a 'system manager'
partition that would always boot first and then issue an error with
the linux install floppys.
