...on different motherboards? LiveCDs are not recommended for real
installs; they're too damned slow. If you're going to use a LiveCD for
doing real work, you'll have to live with the restrictions it imposes on
you, or do a hard disk install.

Kernel patch? Hell no. You need to do as the README that came with the
evil binary-only nVidia kernel module and X server tells you to do.
This amounts to "run the nVidia-installer script again". You have to
run the nVidia-installer script to recompile the nVidia module every
time you update your kernel.

You can use the "nv" X server if you don't need accelerated 3D. This
involves editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restarting X. Just change the
line 'Driver "nvidia" ' to 'Driver "nv" '.
