Need a little help with Modem

What commands would I type in to read a compact flash card reader, and where
would I type them in??
 Redhat 9 Linux ver 2.4.20-8
Also, can anyone tell me the best way to get a SmartLink 56k v92 Internal
PCI modem to work? I have tried most of the sites searched for on google and
I can't seem to get the thing going. I did find the RPM's and got the
drivers installed, but the modem still won't fire up.
says "modem not ready" or Modem not found on any tty settings !
