Can FC3 just not run right on a P2??

I tried FC3 on a pentium2 testbed about the first of the year, had too
many issues with it, and went back to FC1; upgraded after a month or two
to FC2, and did all right. This week I tried upgrading to FC3 from FC2.
I used the same boughten 12/04 CDs as last time, and updated like a mad
bustard -- took six or eight passes with up2date against parts of the
available list, and several hours, but I did it. So what I have should be
current FC3, right?
The issues I had before are gone, not surprisingly. But there are new
ones, chiefly with the display. I run a Benq FP767 flat panel monitor,
which has been available as a canned choice under Display > Hardware ever
since a few months after *FC1* was released. It's supposed to run at 1280
x 1024 -- did under both FC1 and FC2, and still does under FC1 on two
other machines. (I run three against this monitor, with a KVM switch.)
But even by calling it a generic LCD 1280 x 1024 monitor, I can only get
800 x 600. For that reason (or so I suppose) most of my applications --
particularly browsers and newsreader -- are only barely usable, even with
the fonts in their preferences set way, way down.
Is my machine (bought new 11/98; two much bigger hard drives and maximum
memory installed since) just too antiquated for FC3's footprint, or what?
It's certainly running about like cold molasses. But I am not skilled at
linux, despite years of work, and want to run FC3 for a while before
trying to upgrade my main machine from FC1.
