I copied a big file (Windows XP SP2 as it happens :-) which is 267MB)
from my fileserver over nfs. The times were 58s, 49s and 53s. That is on
average 5MB/s ~ 40Mb/s. The server is a Pentium 166MHz. CPU usage was
approaching 100%. I used to use Samba (still do when I have occasions to
use M$) and I think performance was similar.
On the other hand an Athlon 900MHz (not much different from your
Celeron) can manage ~8MB/s even over ssh and occupies about 60% of the
processor.
I don't know what you are doing wrong to get 20Mb/s with a processor
that is at least 4 times faster than my server. Maybe the ethercard
makes a difference - mine are 3C905B-TX. I'm running Mandrake 10.1. If
the card is important, then mine were ~GBP1 from eBay :-)
