Serial port woes

I've been trying to use an old Powerbook (a 3400c) and Yellow Dog Linux
to interface with a milling machine. Basically, what I need it to do is
to send and recieve files sent via ASCII protocol to and from the serial
port. I've been using minicom and ascii-xfr to do that, but the problem
is while I can send files to the milling machine, I have been unable to
recieve any files from the milling machine. It doesn't appear that any
data is coming through the serial port. I have tried other computers and
they seem to work fine, so the issue is not the milling machine itself.
I'm connecting the computer through the mac modem port to a db-25
connector on the milling machine using a mac to hayes cable. Anyone have
any ideas what might cause this?
