TV-out for almost every card with TV-out is a PITA without the evil
binary-only modules AFAICT. I have heard that it's possible to get
TV-out working on some cards with the VESA X module, but that's really a
bit of a last resort.

All nVidia cards available these days use the same X module. Any nVidia
card will work with "nv" (2D only, no TV-out) or "nvidia" (3D, TV-out,
evil nVidia binary modules.) I recently bought an nVidia GeForce 4 MX,
and getting TV-out working was fairly simple once I'd read and
understood the "configuring TV-out" and "configuring TwinView" parts of
the README that comes with the evil nVidia modules.
