I just ordered a processor, memory and motherboard from newegg and I'm
having a lot of problems with it. I've done a memory test and left it
overnight and had no problems. I notice that on windows 2000 far cry
crashes a lot! On linux, I often have problems running kde. I get
various kdeinit and kded errors. This is an amd64 3000+ (oem) and it
arrived with a bend pin. I fixed it with a credit card and it seemed to
work. I've also just replaced the video card (nvidia gforce2 440 mx with
a nvidia 6800). Both sometimes gave me weird missing textures/surfaces
on far cry. I only use windows to play games (currently only far cry)
and I was using linux for everything else.
When I first got this new system, I tried to use my existing slackware
current install but it gave me problems. I installed slamd64 and still
got a bunch of problems. I don't think its slamd64 that's giving me
problems but instead some hardware problem. When I boot to kde, sound
sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I suspect its the board, but I'll
probably try to return both before its too late.
Is there some software method to test this? I don't have enough money to
buy another 64 bit processor. The system is on a small case but I bought
a big heatsink and it seems to keep cool. Bios tells me its running at
under 40 degress Celsius. I've also run the system with both side panels
open and it doesn't make a difference.
