dmesg does not see ide/cdrom

Perhaps since I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.27-2, I'm not able to mount
my ide cdrom or my scsi cdrom. If I have to mount it as loadable, what
is its name?

In dmesg, there's a lot I don't understand.

1. No mention of ide1 at all

2. $ dmesg | grep cdrom returns:

        cdrom: open failed.
        cdrom: open failed.
        cdrom: open failed.

3. $ dmesg | grep PIIX4 returns nothing

4. There are two big "Dump Card State" sections I don't understand,
and so don't know if relevant:
