If that's mostly what you do, an increase in RAM to 256 or 512MB or more
will improve performance noticeably, giving that old machine continued
useability. If it's swapping a lot, then you definitely need more RAM in
it.

Compared to your current setup? "Significant" would be an insignificant
adjective to describe the improvement. Amazing, unbelievable,
mind-boggling, "knock-your-socks-off" would be more fitting. Even
running in 32-bit mode. It would be like moving from your old
reliable, trusted sky blue, 1962 Ford Fairlane, two door sedan to a
very red Ferrari. VERY RED! So, red, in fact, the police issue speeding
tickets even when it's parked. ;-)

I'm the same way. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Or replace it.
Use it 'til it falls apart, then tape it back together and use it 'til
the tape drys out, cracks, and flakes off bit by bit. Then buy better
tape. ;-) But if the machine is becoming a nuisance or frustrating, or is
limiting you and what you need to do with it, then by all means, it's time
for a new one. Or, maybe, a newer one would do just as well.
