I've got a new Compaq Presario V2321 (V2000 series) laptop with some odd
problems.
After getting some help earlier from this group, I put SuSE 9.3 on it and it
runs good. But now I have two other problems. One is that the clock runs
about two to three times as fast as it should. Resetting it doesn't help,
it still gallops.
Back when I had SuSE 9.1 on it I didn't notice the clock running fast. In
fact the whole machine was unacceptably sluggish but the clock was right.
Is there some way to correct this?
More importantly, my 56K dialup modem runs about 9.6K. Just a guess, I
didn't calculate it. Using Lynx, which shows the downloading speed, the
fastest I've seen is 477 bytes per second. This is an external modem on a
serial-to-USB adapter. It works fine on my desktop. I actually have two of
them. Both are ridiculously slow on the laptop but fine on the desktop with
SuSE 9.1.
I did not try the modem when I had SuSE 9.1 on the laptop so I don't know if
9.3 is a factor.
It also just occurred to me that one factor I have not checked is to try the
modems with the USB adapter rather than the direct hookup to the serial
port, but I would guess that wouldn't make a difference but could be wrong.
I needed the adapter for the laptop because it doesn't have a serial port.
Possibly related is the laptop does not want to work my Epson 1650
Perfection USB scanner, but that's not critical. I use the desktop with a
CRT monitor for graphics work because the CRT gives a more natural
rendition of photos than a laptop screen.
Since most of my e-mail is short text messages of 5k or less, I CAN get
along with the incredibly slow modem, but, of course, if there's a setting
I can change to get full speed out of it I'd prefer that.
The machine's other specs are 512 MEG RAM, (as I recall) AMD 1.2 gig chip,
and an 80 gig hard drive.
Thanks in advance.
