As of some time ago the Socket A CPU family from AMD was discontinued. They
reached the End Of Life according to AMD.
The chips still can be found online at different dealers but I would caution
anyone about spending money for an OEM processor. The OEM may be less cost
than the retail version but one does not get the full three year warranty
with the processor and one still has to find a heatsink and fan.
AMD's current lineup is Sempron socket 754 in both 32 and 64 bit processors.
Then in socket 939 one can get Athlons, dual core athlons and FX chips from
AMD. These are all 64 bit processors that are being produced.
I believe if it was myself having problems with the socket A motherboard I
would go ahead and take the current motherboard out of the case and thank it
for serving so well for so long. And replace it with a new motherboard that
will take a 64 bit processor.
