I wanted to thank you for the help. Your comment on the default speed as
9600 was the key. Checking the connection speed in Yast I found 4000000,
apparently the USB speed. When I set it to the correct speed for a dialup
modem, it worked great.

The fast clock turned out to be more of a problem. I tried your two
suggestions of no_timer_check and no_timer_check=0. Neither worked. I even
tried 1, 2 and -1 in place of the zero. No effect. I found in the Mandriva
newsgroup the suggestion that no_timer_check==0 works. It didn't for me.

Googling for Suse fast clock I managed to find the correct thing to type in
at the boot prompt. It's noapic. I don't know what it means but it works.
Sounds like something to do with cameras. Oddly it was in kind of an
oblique statement.

I wasn't expecting anything--I had kind of resigned myself to 48-hour days--
but it worked fine.

Still, I'm crediting it to you because you managed to clarify the proper
search phrase.

I'm mentioning all these in case someone else has problems with the 64-bit
incarnation of SuSE on a laptop.

Just in response to your criticism of my posting in three groups. While not
cross-posting--you called it multi-posting--I saw it as legitimate because
I didn't know if my problems were hardware- or software-related.

I was looking it at as drawing on three sources of expertise, not knowing
which one was the proper one. They were the general Linux group, SuSE and
this one. Since I had a SuSE distribution, I thought I ought to check
there.

The intent was not to annoy anyone but to solve my ridiculous number of
weird laptop problems expeditiously. Most were solved by switching to SuSE
9.3, the rest by changing settings, as detailed here.

They are now all solved. The thing works great. I had been thinking about
frisbeeing it before.

Thank you to everyone.
