System configuration
Toshiba Satellite 3000-514 Laptop
Pentium III mobile, 512MB RAM
GeForce 2 Go
Gentoo Linux
Kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r10 (also tested with various versions
betwenn 2.6.8 and 2.6.10, all show the same behaviour)
Using propritary driver version <= 1.0.6111 and X.Org version <=
6.8.0 system runs fine, OpenGL works, etc.
After upgrade to X.Org version >= 6.8.1 (tested with 6.8.1, 6.8.2
and 6.8.4) and all nVidia propritary driver releases with
versions > 1.0.6111 system goes into deadlock at the moment, the
driver initializes the graphics chip, i.e. at the moment the
screen goes black for resynchronization.
The deadlock seems to be caused by a bad initialization of the
GeForce 2 Go, which the CPU has to share system memory with. My
guess is, that the graphics chip aquires exclusive access to the
system memory, but doesn't release.
Since the Laptop has no real RS232 connector I can't put the
startup console on a serial line and pipe the X.Org log to it.
Making /var/log/X.Org.0.log a fifo and putting it over to
another system using netcat didn't show up anything usefull,
i.e. I only got messages, indication, that everything works as
expected aborting in the middle of the X.Org startup. I can't
state, if the last lines visible are also the last ones printed,
since the deadlock could have prevented transmission of those.
I double checked, that the GeForce 2 Go is still supported by the
deadlocking drivers, lecagy chips, like Riva TNT, GeForce256 and
GeForce 2 (GTS|Ultra) aren't anymore, but GeForce 2 Go is.
