I also have this problem.
My card is an S3 Trio64.
I recently tried to install Ubuntu 5.04, I had to boot with "expert
noquiet" otherwise it would load the vmlinuz, then initrd, then hang
with a blank screen.
After the install, the reboot etc, at the end it would similarily hang.
I had to do "ALT-F1" to get a console, and log in there.
With the S3 driver, i could not get the system to load unless i set the
default depth to 16, then it worked after restarting x.
I could set depth to 24 on the system when i use the vesa driver.
I have not yet gotten the card working above 800x600 resolution.
Here is the logs (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) with (1) the S3 driver in use
and (2) the vesa driver in use. Anybody knows anything about moving the
code up from previous versions and wants me to test, just let me know.
ACTUALLY, i can't post the logs as there seems to be a 1k char limit in
this forum, probably a sane thing to have.
