This is not strictly linux related, but I hang out in the linux groups
cause I only run linux, and so I'll ask here.
This is what happened. I was happily running FC4, but was kind of running
out of space, so I bought a brand new 200G sata drive it's a SATA 2
(3Gb/s) drive. My motherboard is an intel D865GBF and it does have sata
connectors onboard, but I presume they are sata1, as at the 1-2 years ago
there was no sata 2.
I also bought a 512Mb memory module. I installed the memory and the hard
drive, and I wanted to go into the bios to see if it detected them. It
took what seemed like forever to get into the bios, and the hard disk led
was on all the time, but the bios did report the new hard drive and the
memory correctly.
So I exit the bios, and I wait to reboot. But nothing happens. It was
saying to press F12 if I wanted to boot from network, F2 to enter setup.
I turn it off, wait a few, and turn it on again. Same thing, after some
wait, press either F2 or F12. So I do this a couple of times, I take out
the memory, I take out the new drive, and try again, and at one point,
when I started it up - nothing. Nothing at all, the fans wouldn't turn,
nothing. No power whatsoever.
Now this pc was built by me, and despite all reviews, I ventured to buy a
cheap $20 power supply. It looked good at the time, cause it provided 450W.
Went to compusa, bought a power supply tester, and yeah, the power supply
is no longer with us. I hope it's only that.
I'm wondering, could it have died because I overloaded it? I'm buying a
new power supply, so how much power would I need for:
P4 2.8Ghz
Intel D865GBF motherboard
Philips DVD drive
Samsung CDRW drive
No name CD drive
Samsung 120G sata drive 1
Samsung 200 G sata drive 2
1G ram
4 fnas.
Can anybody recommend a power supply suitable for this hardware? Oh, yeah,
and it must be cheap. And quiet too. And reliable, and steady, and...
Is the sata 2 drive compatible with my intel motheboard? It does have a
jumper to force it to 1.5Gb/s (sata 1 I assume?) in the rare instances
when it is not recognized by the motherboard (as per the manufacturer's
instructions).
Oh, one more thing. The memory is PC3200 ddr. Before the new 512Mb module
I had two matching 256s. The new module doesn't have a match, and I just
put it next to one of the 256s. The bios did complain that the memory
configuration was non optimal, but it didn't say it was unusable, or that
it would fry the motherboard. How should I arrange the 2x256 and 1x512
memory modules?
