I have performed the following experiment:

Install Mandrake Linux 10.1 on an IDE disk in first PC.

Run PC like that for a few days, all working fine.

Remove disk and install as boot disk (ie, first BIOS disk) in a different
PC, with different motherboard, drives, graphics card, different amount of
RAM, different monitor (CRT instead of LCD).

Mandrake booted up and ran flawlessly first time and many times
thereafter.

So it is possible, and quite easy.
