They are just removing a competitor from the market. They'll pick up
Maxtor's channels, although it's not clear if that's significant because
the Seagate and Maxtor channels are mostly overlapping. They pick up
Maxtor's patent portfolio and whatever technology they have in the works.
I suppose they could keep the Maxtor brand name for use in a lower priced
line which would allow them to push the prices up on the Seagate branded
drives but it's not clear if that would work because eventually the drives
will have to be identical.
In the short term it means nothing, in the long term it might mean higher
prices but I doubt it. They still have competition from Hitachi, Western
Digital, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Samsung.
