I did exactly that, just bought the wl-330 <http://usa.asus.com/products/communication/wireless/wl-330g/overview.htm> which was a bit of overkill, being 802.11g

plugging the device directly into the RJ45 internal ethernet port for
caladan (the computer's name) doesn't "just work" the way I'd hoped. I
must click on "run wireless setting utility" from the cd. this makes
sense, since the channel, and other stuff, has to be set. (running
win2k at the moment, will install linux shortly.)

You don't need to run anything from the CD. Just configure the PC to be on address 192.168.1.2 (or any other in that subnet) and point your web browser at 192.168.1.1

however, plugging the wl-330 into a hub, and then the hub into caladan doesn't work at all, and the utility on the cd doesn't find the device.

That isn't supposed to work, wl-330 clones the MAC address of your ethernet adapter. It can only provide wireless access to one computer. Try to switch off MAC cloning, you may be lucky. Never tried that.

in linux, how would you find the wl-330, if it's plugged into the hub? it still has to be configured for ad-hod, channel, SSID, etc. I'll be installing linux on two computers, caladan and arrakis, and want to give internet access to both computers by using the hub. (the router is the upstairs landlords, hence the wireless connection.)

In that case I would suggest you use two ethernet adaptors on one of the machines and set up the appropiate routing for the other one.

internet <--> cable modem <--> 802.11b router <--> wl-330 <--> hub <--> arrakis & caladan

Like this:

... <--> 802.11b router <--> wl-330 <--> arrakis <--> hub <--> etc.

Kind regards,

Iwo

You were exactly right and I wasn't reading what you wrote carefully enough.
