OK, I found a store that would build me this config:
Motherboard: Gigabyte K8NF-9 S939 CPU AMD Athlon 3800 x 2 DUAL DDR 1GB/400 Kingston FDD 3 1-2 Frontal 6600 256MBI PCI Express HDD 200 GB serial ATA DVD LG4167 OEM Black
It comes at about 250$ less than the Presario 1667 which has the same CPU. Is the above config any good?
The Kingston-branded RAM is good. There's nothing really wrong with the LG-branded DVD or the Gigabyte-branded motherboard. (Neither company is exactly high-end, but they're better than unrecognizable brand names.)
The graphics card appears to be using an nVidia chip (guessing based on the "6600" designation), but nVidia is just a chip maker. So there's no brand name listed for the graphics card, and that would concern me. Likewise, there's no brand name listed for the hard drive and that would concern me even more.
There's also no mention of case and power supply. If you're going to be working inside the system yourself, a well-designed case is worth the extra cost. (Most brand-name cases fit the bill, albeit at a much higher cost than the generic cases.) The power supply is even more important. A good 350W power supply from a well-known vendor is better than a cheap 450W supply (and costs a fair bit more, too).
