Can't burn Double Layer DVDs

When I try to use growisofs to burn a double layer (8G) dvd I get
follwing error:
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/disk4/DISK1.iso of=/dev/hdd obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/hdd: splitting layers at 1856336 blocks
:-( unable to SEND DVD+R DOUBLE LAYER RECORDING INFORMATION: Input/output error
the original growisofs command (generated by k3b):
/usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/hdd=/disk4/DISK1.iso -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -dvd-compat -speed=4
I've also tried it without any -speed option.
The dvd burner is Mad Dog MD-16xDVD9A2.
I'm using growisofs version 5.21. The OS is Fedora Core 4.
I can burn other media (including single layer DVD) just fine. Also,
I have used the DVD burner to correctly burn double layer DVDs under
windows. k3b can correctly query the drive for the media types
(including the DVD+R double layer disks).
anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong and how I can burn double
layer dvds?
thanks
