usb devices do not appear in dmesg in FC4

I have an HP Pavilion a1130n computer with an AMD 3500+ 64bit processor (although I'm using a 32 bit kernel), 250 GB SATA HD and a 200 MB PATA (IDE) HD with 1 GB of memory.

It is a dual boot with Windows XP on the SATA hard disk and Fedora Core 4 on the IDE disk.

If I run Windows XP, my usb ports (I have 3 front, 2 back) all work fine and my usb printer does too.

When I run Fedora, none of the USB devices are recognized. If I try to set up a print queue, /dev/usb/lp0 does not exist. When I plug in a memory stick (thumb drive) in any port and then do dmesg | tail -10, there is no new output. It is as though the OS cannot see any usb devices.

1. Possible relevant info follows:
2. I have a /proc/bus/usb directory but there is nothing in it.
3. The HAL daemon is running.
4. Using lsmod (see end of message for full lsmod output) I see that ohci_hcd and ehci_hcd are laoded, but usb_storage is not. (I can modprobe usb_storage to load it, but the symptoms do not change - nothing is recognized.)
5. Maybe a red herring. I have apci=off in the kernel line in Grub. I have to have it so that boot does not hang on trying to find the SATA drivers (do not know why it is needed - solution was offered by someone else). I have also added noapic to the kernel line, but it made no difference.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
