I'd get the 3800+, plonk on a good cooler, and overclock it a few 100 MHz - saves money, but that's just me. Pay for the extra MHz and you get to keep your warranty though....
You made the right choice - AMDs have officially taken about 20% of the market share from Intel because of this wonderful 64-bit line of chips. And, although you're concerned about AMDs being incompatible with Intel applications, take note that the 64-bit instruction set Intel is using currently is almost directly copied from AMD's innovative work.
So in the future we should be asking, "Is this Intel processor going to be compatible with the AMD instruction set?" :-)
